The future has arrived and now we are seeing more and more electric vehicles on the road today.
I get calls regularly on pricing for EV charger installations in homes. They are numerous and some are different than others. I've seen them with direct wiring and with plug-ins.
Pricing can vary depending on where in the garage you end up locating it based on the distance of the electrical breaker panel. Electricians of Dallas LLC offers free estimates. Call us at 972-418-0691 to set up your appointment today.
EV chargers come in various amperages depending on how fast you want the chargers to charge your vehicle.
The largest charger with plug-ins is 50 amp. There needs to be room in the electrical breaker panel for a two-pole breaker and the type of receptacle should be an industrial type. You can have a standard home 50-amp receptacle installed, however, there have been chargers that require the entire amperage load rating which has caused some of the receptacles to go bad. This is due to the standard time the receptacle is rated for, which is up to 3 hours at 80% of the breaker size. If the charger goes to 90%, then the time frame is half or less. This will cause heat to build up in the receptacle and its eventual degradation. Make sure if you plan on getting a plug-in type charger to ask for an industrial type 50-amp receptacle.
The downside to plug-ins, is you're limited on how fast you can charge your vehicle.
There are chargers that can go up to 100 amps. These would be the type that needs to be hardwired. The downside to hardwired EV chargers is that you have to wait for the charger to come in.
